October Art Challenge

I have to admit, September has been quite an emotional month. Dave and I moved country, and as i mentioned in my last blog post, it has been a true rollercoaster of highs and lows.

But I am glad to tell you that we are ending this adventure on a very high note and there will be a big announcement coming soon. I'm not going to give too much away because I want to keep it as a bit of a surprise - and that's why - This month's optional art challenge theme is all about happy surprises!

Optional Theme Examples:

  • Finding a kitten and adopting it.

  • Surprise party.

  • Meeting an old friend in an unexpected place.

  • Finding a pirate map in your attic.

Art Block Busting Tip of the Month

This month's art block tip is as controversial as it is powerful:

Focus on recovery.

Don't work, put away your pencils, step away from your desk, and forget about drawing.

As much as art block can feel like inner sabotage, it is a defence mechanism.

Burnout kicks in when we run out of fuel to burn. That fuel is a mix of energy, creativity and willpower.

When you have a lot going on, and you are doing your best to juggle everything in life at once for a while, some or all these fuel ingredients can run low and need replenishing.

By causing art block, your body is pretty much telling you:

hey! We need to slow down and rest before we do some serious damage to ourselves!

Just like fatigue after a big workout stops you from pushing yourself so you can recover and heal up to avoid injury, artist block is a signal that your brain and creativity need time to recover.

So, next time you feel burned out, don't be hard on yourself, listen to what your body and mind need.

Allow yourself to recover, get plenty of rest, and inspiration will come back on its own.
